7th October 2024:
I stayed here with my son and we were totally happy with our stay. Such a warm, friendly atmosphere in such delightful surroundings that we felt totally at home with Nanette and Rob. Great breakfasts and a really wonderful room made our stay on Arran a trip of a lifetime.
Tips:Arran is a compact island with wonderful walks, ruins and a wide variety of excellent places to eat. Even just behind Cruikshank's are waterfalls and a bird hide in spectacular scenery so plenty for everyone to enjoy.

Lovely place, lovely house, Rob and Nanette were the best hosts, prepared delicious breakfast, built a fire for us to enjoy in the dining room and had many tips for the area (and Glasgow, our next destination).
Tips:We enjoyed the many fabulous walks the island has to offer (Machrie Moor, King's Cave, Glen Rosa (absolutely beautiful). A meal at Mara's deli in Corrie is also recommended.

After traveling 5000 miles which included planes, car rentals, and ferries, we arrived the stunning CRUICKSHANKS Bed and Breakfast on the Isle of Arran. Nannette and Rob are the consummate hosts. Gentle and funny, they introduced us to our rooms in the Garden Suite. Fully equipped, we could enjoy the lush gardens and our privacy. Breakfast in the main house was made to order, from poached fish to porridge. The decor of the house is very subtle Scottish. Thistle wall paper blends with the tartan carpet. Even an evening walk added to the ambiance of this magnificent lodging. It is highly recommended.
Tips:Be sure look for the library in the woods and the Google picnic table.

Helpful and friendly Well equipped room Quiet location with good views Tasty breakfast
Tips:One of the local cafes (The Shore) is only available a small amount of time for evening meals (BYOB). Highly recommend booking there if you can get a slot. The other place we ate was the Shurig which is also nice and no need to book. Arran is a great place for walking but hiking boots are advisable as some of the walks are muddy and over rough terrain.

6* in every way ... Nanette & Rob a sheer delight and wonderful together. We expected a lot given their 5* AA Rating and received much more.
Tips:If a golfer play Shiskine ... by far the best course. Loved our climb up Goat Fell and so lucky the way the weather turned out to facilitate the walk.

Beautiful location. Peace and quiet environment. Rob and Nanette are great hosts. They have very good local knowledge on activities and things to do. Pearl suite is the best room with sea view for plus a cosy lounge with armchairs as well as a dropleaf writing desk.
Tips:For keen golfers, Whiting Bay GC is 200 yards up the road. Very interesting uphill course with great view. Lamlash GC is 5 miles away and a beautiful undulating course with great view. Both are very accessible and people are welcoming. Good Restaurants in Whiting Bay are lacking. In the summmer, The Shore serves good quality food from Friday to Monday. Otherwise, simple lunch menu from Thursday to Monday. Bay Store serves good coffee and cakes/ pastries. Brodick and Lamlash have more restaurants.

Nanette and Rob were very welcoming hosts with lots of great advice on the island and where to eat locally. The accomodation was excellent with fantastic views over to the Ayrshire coast and breakfast was beautifully prepared and cooked which set us up for the day. We were looking for a relaxing break and their attention to detail helped us achieve that.
Tips:The Glenashdale falls walk is close to Cruickshanks and is worth doing and Kingscross point was also a pleasant walk nearby. We enjoyed the Lamlash Bay Hotel and Cafe Thyme for eating out.

Fabulous hosts, very welcoming and gave us lots of useful information about the locality. Loved all the added extras in the room & of course the yummy cakes! Thank you!
Tips:The Shurrig was great. Busy but after a short wait we were seated by window with sea views & had a lovely meal. A 10min walk, uphill on way back but we enjoyed the fresh air & exercise. The Drift Inn in Lamlash was busy, had a nice meal but definitely need to book in advance. We played golf at Lamlash GC, it’s hilly but a lovely course with great views and interesting holes. We enjoyed food & drink in the 19th afterwards, would recommend a visit.

Just a lovely couple who provide an excellent and homely experience. For instance the home made marmalade is delicious and all the breakfast ingredients are superb. The house offers plenty of interesting reading material.

14th June 2024:
The garden suite is a perfect little getaway to recharge, having the option of a bath and shower is great, the fire is a lovely thing to put on at night and I really appreciated Rob did this on the first night so that it was warm by the time I returned from dinner. Service is excellent, breakfast is tasty and the hosts are friendly and warm. A real pleasure to stay here, thanks again!
Tips:The french fox in Brodick is reasonably priced and the best meal I had while on Arran, seating inside and out is possible and there are some cool wee jewellery and other shops dotted nearby. Arran Ecosavvy run nature, wildlife and other themed walks which are free, welcoming and informative. A great way to explore the island if you're travelling solo and on a budget! Otters tail is great for kayaking, my first experience kayaking and it felt informative but relaxed and I had so much fun, will definitely be back!

We had a wonderful time at Cruickshanks. The room was beautiful, the breakfasts were delicious and the warm, friendly welcome we had was just wonderful. It made our trip to Arran so special. Sitting in the ceilidh room with a fire and a good book was magical, and all the recommendations really helped us plan our days.
Tips:We had some lovely lunches and evening meals at Cafe Thyme and Lamlash Bay Hotel. Blackwater Bakery for pastries was lovely. The Eas Mor waterfall walk and the Kings Caves are a must. If you can, Goatfell is spectacular. We loved Brodick Castle and learnt so much about the island on our visit there. The Wee Bookshop in Corrie was also wonderful. You have yo get some Arran Ice Cream and some Arran cheese during your stay! An evening on Kildonan beach was also a highlight for us.

A beautifully appointed B&B. We were made very welcome and given helpful advice regarding the local walks, sights and amenities. Nothing was too much trouble and we enjoyed our conversations together.
Tips:Travel light with good footwear and wet weather gear. Sadly, the weather conditions were against our attempting Goatfell. However, Arran Active in Brodick gave us details of experienced guides to take us if the conditions were more favourable. It is a very good starting point for information. The Deli/Cafe in Brodick was very good for a light lunch. Brodick Castle is definitely worth a visit, especially as they have a red squirrel hide. We thoroughly enjoyed our early evening supper at the Mara Fish Bar and Deli, in Corrie. On our host's recommendation we walked from Cruickshanks to the Glenashdale Falls, which were spectacular; then onto the Giants' Graves. The Lochranza Distillery is worth a visit. There is a lot to experience on Arran, but we needed longer.

The bespoke breakfast service was a treat and the food was delicious. Our only suggestion would be to if you could try and squeeze an occasional chair in downstairs as the sofa is small.

Excellent suite in every way. The log fire, as autumnal weather has arrived, was so welcome. Even down to daily cake. The breakfast was first class with interesting and welcoming hosts. The location was so good. Whiting Bay is ideal and the guest house is set up above the village.
Tips:The very close 2-3 hour Giants Graveyard and spectacular waterfall walk is excellent. Perhaps the best way is GG first and then the waterfall. Brodick castle and especially the gardens are worth a visit all year around. Take the road around the circumference of Arran and stop at Lagg Distillery for lunch (Tuesday to Saturday) for lunch.

17th September 2023:
Nan and Rob went out of their way to make me feel welcome and comfortable. They were really friendly and helpful and suggested things for me to do during my stay. They had an abundance of books and helpful information for visitors to use. The breakfast was top notch and it was a nice touch to have many elements of the breakfast and other items during my stay be homemade by Nan and Rob themselves. The B&B was lovely, a modern en-suite with homely and comfortable decor and furniture in the Whimsical room. The bed was extremely comfortable and I slept well which is something I often struggle with when travelling but didn’t here. It was extremely quiet as you’d expect given the location and the room was dark and peaceful during my sleep. My only critique was it was a tad on the cold side during the dark evenings and through the night but there were extra sheets and covers provided to aid with this and heating was better on my second night of my stay. Difficult to get the temperature right though given there has been a spell of very hot weather then a considerable drop of late and feeling much chillier. I was still comfortable and felt like a home away from home. Travelling by foot was a bit of a slog at times up the hill and whinding road to get to the B&B but it was manageable. Would definitely recommend to others if your looking for warm and friendly hosts and comfortable surroundings.
Tips:Glenashdale Falls, Giants’ Graves. Recommend. The Shuring great meal on my first night however the second time on my next night it could have been better, chips were really overdone and difficult to eat and the macaroni could have been better, it was quite bland. The Shore was lovely, great food and lovely cake, excellent service.

We enjoyed our stay at Cruikshanks. Our room was very comfy and equipped with everything we needed during our stay. We looked forward to the little touches like the home cooked chocolate shortbread and the ‘origami surprises’ in the bathroom! The breakfasts were amazing and we’ve already followed Nanette’s example in making our own delicious muesli. We typically choose Bed and Breakfast stays because the good ones make you feel that you are a valued guest and take time to ensure that you have plenty of information to enhance your stay. Nanette and Rob are certainly stars at this.
Tips:Our favourite restaurant experience was the our ‘Bring Your Own Bottle’ meal at The Shore - but you must book in advance. Thyme Cafe was also good - we stopped off there on a drive around the island.

This was an amazing place to stay. I felt like I was staying with family. I didn’t need to ask for anything as it was all there. We stayed in the Honeysuckle room which was gorgeous. The bed was very comfy and for once I didn’t feel like I missed my own bed back home. Loved the en-suite too, plenty warm water and the shower was great for washing long hair. Very powerful. I did not make use of the gorgeous roll top bath available downstairs this time but I might when I stay next time. The breakfast was delicious and the home baking to die for. Already planning our next visit
Tips:If you are travelling to Arran by car then everywhere is easy to access. We had afternoon coffee at the bottom of the road in the Coffee Pot, it was lovely and staff were so welcoming, nothing was a bother. We ate in Lamlash and the meal In the Glenisle was lovely. The staff were just lovely and service was excellent. If you need a sandwich head for Lochranza to the Sandwich place opposite the Ferry. We went back a second time for our lunch as it was so good. I suggest just stop when you can to take in the scenery and visit anywhere you fancy for food on route during the day. I think it’s best to book for evening meals as places get booked up. We had not been on Arran for some time so it was really lovely to be back. If it is raining where you are try driving on a bit you should find sun. Have a lovely stay - hope you love it too

Hello, Nanette and Rob run a first rate boutique bed and breakfast. Nothing is too much trouble to them and and their attention to detail in all things relating to your stay with them is exceptional. Thank you for a special stay in your wonderful home.
Tips:As Nanette suggested in the information she provided, book any restaurant/bar food reservations ahead of your visit if possible. Arran is not a place to find establishments offering food post 9 pm. On this trip I concentrated on seeing things in the south of the island and the beaches all have something to offer from being either sandy or pebbly. Perfect stay; lovely room-very comfortable-with good facilities, including a very well stocked 'day-room'. Good breakfast (and a decent choice) cooked perfectly. Just right as host.
Tips:We concentrated on the 'stone circles', standing stones and burial mounds etc., great (if you like that sort of thing, and if you don't, they might change your mind) and a couple of walks based on Hutton's "Unconformity", stunning locations (again, with looking it up if you're not sure what the "Unconformity" is, you might enjoy). Also, took lunch at Cafe Thyme, highly recommended.

All the dishes were cooked with the best products and were delicious. We learnd about the traditional way of cooking prorridge, wich we liked very much. Charming house with very comfortable accommodation and a delicious breakfast. The views over the sea are delightful. It was pleasant to be able to walk to and from a restaurant in Whiting Bay.
Tips:We climbed Goat Fell on a beautiful early autumn day and enjoyed the experience. We took our time and it took us 5 hours. Brodick Castle is interesting and has beautiful gardens - including specimens of the Arran Whitebeam. Machrie Standing Stones are spectacular and worth a visit. The site has several massive stones and stone circles. The site is a level walk of 1.7k from the car park.

Absolutely superb. Rob and Nanette are simply the best hosts we've ever encountered on our many travels both in the UK and around the world. Our accommodation was first class and I loved the spotting scope in the bedroom. First viewing through the scope onto Whiting Bay literally focused directly on a small pod of dolphins. Breakfast is lovely, in particular I'd recommend Nanette's muesli and Rob's smoked haddock.
Tips:Simply enjoy the island, it's all wonderful.

This B & B won an award for "Best B & B in Britain" and it deserves it. They are not resting on their laurels, either. The couple who own and run the place are very serious about providing a superior experience for travelers. The setting in Whiting Bay is very beautiful, and there are very good restaurants in the village. The B & B is located up a hill from the village and is very quiet. The beds are extremely high quality and very comfortable. The breakfast is top-notch, all local and prepared to order, with a wide variety of choices. (If you don't know what black pudding is, ask before you order it). They provide great advice for where to eat, things to see and do that are tailored to their guest's interests. The Isle of Arran is gorgeous and diverse, often called "Scotland in miniature" We did not hire a car, it was do-able but the buses are not very frequent. We did a lot of walking, which suited us.
Tips:Talk to the proprietors, they are very happy to provide advice and it will be up to date. We ate at Most and The Shore in Whiting Bay, and the Douglas Hotel in Brodick, all meals were wonderful. We climbed Goat Fell, visited Brodick Castle which has a don't-miss-it park surrounding it with hundreds of rare trees (they have a full-size Giant Sequoia!). We also visited the stone rings at Machrey Moor and had lunch at Cafe Thyme on the west side. There is a bicycle hire shop in Brodick and if you are a fit cyclist or are willing to plump for an e-bike the cycling is gorgeous.

Beautifully located premises, with great views (sea, beautiful garden, fields). Detailed final route description comes in handy; good, useful information on island possibilities, and for spots to visit en route (on the ‘mainland’) to the ferry. Warm-hearted host couple, with various creative skills 😍. Hospitality tray is nicely stocked, and daily, home-baked cupcakes awaiting you in downstairs sitting room in the afternoon when returning from a day’s trip. Nanette’s (breakfast) muesli is definitely delicious.
Tips:Whiting Bay, & nearby Lamlash, etc have a variety of nice eateries to try, and it’s also possible to get something from a nearby supermarket to eat in the B&B, Nanette & Rob will happily provide you with plates & cutlery for this in the Breakfast Room, and you can store some of it in the small, guest fridge there as well. A great number of interesting hikes nearby and after a small drive. Host couple provides Ordinance Survey & other maps, as well as booklet with 40 hikes to use during your stay. The isle’s undulating, narrow roads are a nice challenge for (touring) cyclists and drivers non-local drivers.

Nanette and Rob were always really helpful and friendly with tips on what to do around the island, places to eat or just general chat. The home baked cakes were a lovely little extra after a day out exploring!
Tips:A highlight for us was definitely seeing seals near Sannox (a tip from a fellow guest) so we would recommend that. And the bed - best nights sleep we've had for ages - we want one of those mattresses.
Tips:Leave the car and use the bus to get around as much as you can. Bus stops close by on the main street. Lovely warm welcome, which made us feel at home. The room was clean, spacious and the bed was really comfortable! The only small issue I had was removing 4 spiders from the room on the first evening. They don’t bother me but Lucy is terrified of them. They was mainly the bedroom above the windows. Beside that I think it’s the best B&B stay we have ever had, and we have done a lot of travelling!

This was a last minute find after our stay at Auchrannie Resort was cancelled due to a Covid outbreak. We were not disappointed. We were in the garden room, a lovely little suite with its own separate entrance, great if you like a bit of privacy. The lounge area is cosy with a log burner, tea and coffee facilities, and a dining table. The bedroom is on a mezzanine level above the lounge, and the large bathroom with bath and shower is at the rear. The whole suite is beautifully decorated and very stylish. Breakfast can be served in or outdoors on the private patio. The food was excellent, cannot recommend this place enough for a quiet, relaxing break.
Tips:The house is on the hill above Whiting Bay, and would be a bit of a walk to get into the village, however it is a short drive. There are not many restaurants in Whiting Bay, but there are a few in Lamlash or Brodick. We had excellent food in the Brodick Bar and Brasserie.

We had a family wedding on the Island and made a great choice staying at Cruickshanks Boutique B&B. We were welcomed by tea and coffee and homemade cakes in the lounge with the log burning stove. There were loads of books and games and we had a lovely evening. The rooms were beautifully decorated and very peaceful, en-suite shower room gorgeous and the local cosmetics and fluffy towels/slippers added a touch of luxury. The sea view from our room was gorgeous! The breakfast was just amazing (one of the best I've eaten. I had the home made muesli followed by the full Scottish with the perfect poached egg. The next day I had the Scottish porridge with cream and maple syrup (I even had a breakfast lesson to watch how to poach the egg!) Nanette and Rob were great company and we had lots of laughs. In previous years we have stayed in Arran for family holidays on a self-catering basis. This time we were having a long weekend on our own to celebrate a special anniversary and wanted to treat ourselves. Cruickshanks was the perfect place for such a treat, not least because Rob and Nan are such intuitive hosts, are genuinely interested in getting to know their guests and have such a clear vision of the kind of quality experience they want to offer. They’ve given careful thought to every detail and found a perfect balance between an environment that feels special whilst still being relaxed. We enjoyed a beautiful room, really comfortable bed, great shower, quality tea/coffee and Rob’s amazing breakfasts. Little touches in the room like homemade shortbread and soap, cosy throws and antique furniture, as well as a Farrow and Ball colour palette throughout the house make all the difference. Nan had even made us a delicious anniversary chocolate cake (which we happily worked our way through over the 3 nights we were there!). They both took genuine pleasure in sharing their books, maps and local tips with us, as well as providing anytime access to a large, comfortable guest living room and beautiful garden. We had a really wonderful few days in Arran which was helped by great weather, but Cruickshanks was central to making it so special.

Staying at Cruickshanks B&B was like visiting old friends. We were given tea and homemade cupcakes upon our arrival and great advice about things to do on the island. The breakfast menu was exactly what you would wish to set you up for a long day of exploring on the island. We will be back!
Tips:Nanette sent a concise email with a list of local restaurants after our booking and upon arrival provided a handy map of the island to help you find your way along with helpful suggestions to ensure you find what you are looking for.

Every now and then you realise that you have found something very special and that was absolutely the case when we stayed at Cruikshanks. Rob and Nanette have created the most lovely place to stay (beautifully appointed and immaculate rooms) but what really stood out was their warm hospitality and the food. I think its fair to say that anything less than perfect just wont do for them and it absolutely shines through.

Very friendly and welcoming. House decor immaculate, and breakfast was superb. Beautiful extensive views from the front of the building. Would like to have stayed longer and discussed mutual interests with our hosts.
Tips:Check if evening meal is offered. We missed it unfortunately. A few good restaurants nearby, such as Coast and Felicity's. If walking i the dark take or borrow a torch - we needed the house one. There are lovely walks to Glenashdale Falls (about 1.5 miles, or longer walks or cycles on the forest tracks above the house. Golf course is next door.

We loved our stay at Cruickshanks. Rob and Nan were wonderful hosts and they have renovated their home into a stylish and welcoming B&B. Everything was sparkling clean. Our bedroom had a very comfortable super-king bed and we appreciated the Arran Aromatics toiletries in the en-suite. We spent a lot of time in the cosy lounge by the wood burning stove - the perfect place to relax after a day exploring the island. Rob is a talented and passionate cook and his fabulous breakfasts set up up for the day. We will definitely stay at Cruickshanks when we come back to Arran

This is a special place. Beautiful. The interior is great and not only the furniture, we also liked the atmosphere. The hosts are like friends, very helpful and with a good sense of humor. Their references for the daytime are really nice. Breakfast time with Rob is highly recommended, very funny. We can´t imagine a better place on Arran. As we are golfer it´s perfect, there is an interesting course nearby. The only thing I would have to complain: the bed is too cosy and you won´t get up in the morning... but thinking of the breakfast, YOU WILL !
Tips:What we liked: COAST Bistro - nice for lunch ( terrace ) - Glenisle Restaurant - Tea Room at the Golf Course Shiskine ( lunch ) - Cafe Thyme - Mara ( Corrie ) - drive around the isle - Beach at Kildonan and nearby Blackwaterfoot - Glenashdale Falls walk - Loch Garbed walk - mountains nearby Lochranza in the late afternoon ( deers ) - Shiskine Golf Course ( wow ) - road from Machrie Moor back to Brodick - ... we had too little time !! This is our favorite B & B of all time! Rob and Nanette are the most lovely and accommodating hosts--and the house is a treasure--both luxurious and comfortable. We typically aren't breakfast people, but we'd travel to Arran just for Rob and Nanette's cooking!

Without doubt, one of the best B&B's we've ever stayed in - from the welcome when we arrived to the exceptional service during our stay. much of that was above, and beyond, what you would normally expect from a B&B or, indeed, from a hotel. When next in Arran, we'll definitely be back. Thanks again for a great stay. Sandy & Angela
Tips:Don't go when it's raining!!! that said, there's still plenty to do, but they do tend to get blitzed when the weather's not so good. cold/cloudy, not a problem because you can still do the fantastic walks the island has to offer, but rain can be a b****r! the two restaurants in Whiting bay (The Coast & Felicity's) are both worth a visit and are within easy? walking distance. Great location, quiet and with great sea views. Rob and Nanette were perfect hosts making us feel welcome and relaxed and giving advice on what to do on Arran. They even solved a ferry issue for us! Or the full Scottish!! Everything was perfect. We would both highly recommend a visit to this little gem.
Tips:Arran is beautiful and we saw it in all weathers. The Kings Cave is a comfortable 2 hour walk incorporating forest and beach but the more ambitious could tackle Goatsfell. Brodick Castle was closed for renovation but the gardens are stunning. Take a rainy day to drive around the whole island stopping at various sights, outlets, distillery, coffee shops etc. We ate at the Douglas Hotel (excellent), Coast (very good) and Thyme Cafe (wonderful). Coffees at the Lighthouse and Felicity's (both good).

Tips:Restaurant to recommend is the Black Grouse in Blackwaterfoot with an attentive host, wonderful selection of Scottish gins and whisky and delicious menu. Cafe Thyme in Machrie offers a wide variety of teas and scruffy cake. We enjoyed the walk to Glenashdale waterfalls and the King's Cave

1st Class and Accommodation and Service from this small and cosy B&B.
Tips:During the busy season it is a good idea to book dinner reservations before you arrive, Nanette and Rob were very helpful in suggesting places to eat but a lot of places were fully booked.

Nanette and Rob were fantastic hosts, very friendly and welcoming, ran the B&B beautifully well. Superb breakfasts, and the afternoon tea and cake after a days exploring was most refreshing.Useful tips for the island, and help with all things, especially when the ferries were cancelled.
Tips:The nearby waterfall is a lovely walk, about 2 hours leisurely pace. Felicity's restaurant is walking distance, and good food and drink. The Whiting bay golf club has spectacular views, very hilly, a motorized golf cart is recommended. The Lagg hotel is nice and quaint. Cafe Thyme near Macrie is a top spot for lunch, nice food. The best golf course on the island is Shiskine, if you can't pay it, at least walk around it, stunning scenery.

Choose this boutique hotel as it is off the main road and is significantly quiet with views down the Clyde coast, and because you will have a real welcome, and significantly good breakfasts, cooked to your order (do not miss the haddock and poached egg).
Tips:Go and relax, and if you need it you can access 4G. Walks are very good, both on the beach and up the falls.

Stayed in the pearl suite. Fab room and breakfast was lovely. Really enjoyed our break on the Arran and staying at the B&B. Only improvement I could suggest is improve signage to the B&B.
Tips:Book a restaurant the night you are staying.

We were on Arran with friends for a walking holiday and stayed 8 nights. The rooms are spacious, recently decorated to a high standard and very comfortable with en-suite facilities. Our hosts were very welcoming and made great efforts to meet our needs such as drying out very wet clothing after a walk. They know the island well and were able to give good advice on the walks, where to go and what to do. The lounge provides a warm and comfortable place to meet others for the evening. We chose simple breakfasts of fruit, porridge and toast (local breads) but I am sure the cooked ones are equally as good. We left as friends rather than guests
Tips:There are lovely coastal walks where seals and other wildlife can be seen generally without being annoyed by the midges

Nanette and Rob were the perfect host, always aware of guests to feel comfortable and giving useful information. Amazing breakfast and nice and clean facilities.
Tips:The b&b is in Whiting Bay, a nice area surrounded by the Glenashdale Falls and King's Graves. The North of Arran is a really nice area to explore, lots of natural paths and wildlife to see.

All in all an excellent experience - welcoming, informative, comfortable, guest centred. Many lovely touches e.g. Homemade delicious muesli, locally produced toiletries, quality local produce for breakfast freshly cooked how you like it.
Tips:Hosts will aid guests to get the most from their visit depending on what they like to do etc.
